Walking the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: Japan’s Giant Snow Corridor

By IROHA Travel

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is home to one of Japan’s most spectacular seasonal sights—the famous Giant Snow Wall (Yuki-no-Otani). In this detailed travel video, IROHA Travel takes viewers through the snow corridor, only accessible in spring when snow removal creates towering walls up to 20 meters high. The journey begins at Ogizawa (扇沢), the Nagano-side gateway, correctly spelled Ogizawa despite a common alternate spelling.

To reach the snow corridor, travelers combine several forms of public transportation: starting with a Shinkansen and bus from Tokyo to Ogizawa, then using electric buses, cable cars, and even a ropeway to reach Murodo. Along the way, the video showcases the impressive Kurobe Dam, panoramic alpine vistas, and unique vehicles like the trolleybus—an engineering feat in the mountains. The spring landscape is dominated by massive snowdrifts, and the snow corridor near Murodo is the highlight, attracting both domestic and international tourists seeking an unforgettable natural wonder.

During the walk, visitors are awed by the sheer height of the snow walls—carved annually after heavy winter snow—while the endless white landscape emphasizes the grandeur of the Northern Japan Alps. The video concludes with a stop at a local soba shop, offering a taste of mountain cuisine. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is not only a feat of infrastructure but also a celebration of Japan’s alpine culture and nature.

Murodo sits at 2,450 meters, making it one of Japan’s highest accessible points by public transit. The entire journey is a must-see from April to June, with optimal viewing of the snow corridor, scenic walks, and access via Ogizawa Station, Kurobe Dam, and culminating at the famous snow wall.
