Walking Tamagawa Josui: Hanakoganei to Takanodai Along the Cherry Blossom Route in Tokyo

By Nonbiri Walk

In this fifth installment of the Tamagawa Josui Walk series, viewers are taken on a scenic journey along the historic Tamagawa-josui waterway during Tokyo’s cherry blossom (sakura) season. The walk begins at Koganei Park, located near Hanakoganei, and follows the river route all the way to Takanodai Station. Filmed on April 8, 2025, the video highlights not just the beauty of the iconic waterway, but also the lush parks, residential neighborhoods, and the vibrant atmosphere created by blooming cherry trees.

The Tamagawa-josui (玉川上水) is a famous man-made waterway in western Tokyo, constructed in the 17th century to supply fresh water to the city. Today, its route offers a popular walking path, especially picturesque in spring. Starting at Koganei Park (小金井公園), a beloved local recreation spot, the walk passes through tranquil riverside environments and suburban streets lined with cherry blossoms, capturing the essence of seasonal change in the Tokyo suburbs.

The path to Takanodai Station (鷹の台駅) is tranquil, with occasional glimpses of daily life and local landmarks—perfect for travelers interested in lesser-known yet accessible outdoor experiences near central Tokyo. Both Hanakoganei and Takanodai are serviced by the Seibu railway network, making the start and endpoints of this walk convenient for visitors. Exploring Tamagawa Josui’s walking path is an excellent way to discover Tokyo’s suburban charm and historical engineering, especially during hanami, the annual cherry blossom viewing tradition.
