On the night of February 2, 2025, Kyoto's Gion district was filled with energy and excitement as the Hyottoko dance procession took over the streets in celebration of Setsubun. The event began at Manzoku Inari Shrine (満足稲荷神社), where fox shrine maidens (狐巫女) performed bean throwing (豆撒き), followed by a Hyottoko dance performance.
The procession started in Gion Shirakawa (祇園白川), winding through various famous streets such as Shinbashi Street (新橋通り), Shirakawa-suji (白川筋), and Hanamikoji Street (花見小路), including notable spots such as Tatsumi Daimyojin Shrine (辰巳大明神前), Ichiriki-tei (一力亭), and Tsuribashi Bridge (巽橋).
A particularly heartwarming moment occurred when a baby dressed as a Hyottoko joined the group, earning the admiration of tourists and onlookers. Later in the night, maiko performers joined the event in a Kyoto tradition known as 'Setsubun Obake' (節分お化け), where they dress in unusual costumes. The atmosphere culminated in a grand finale on Nishi Hanamikoji Street (西花見小路), leaving the audience in awe of this unique Kyoto spectacle.
This vibrant event showcased Kyoto’s deep cultural traditions and brought joy to both locals and international visitors alike. If you ever visit Kyoto during Setsubun, this is an unforgettable experience that you shouldn't miss!
