Overnight Stay on the Yakumo Limited Express at Okayama Station During Hakubi Line Suspension

By 丹波篠山路快速

This video documents a unique travel experience at Okayama Station (岡山駅) when heavy rain caused the suspension of the Hakubi Line (伯備線), operated by JR West. The Hakubi Line is a vital route connecting the San’in and Sanyo regions and often serves as a crucial axis for both local commuters and travelers making the journey between the northern and southern parts of the Chūgoku region.

Due to the severe weather, the Yakumo Limited Express (特急やくも号), a key service on the Hakubi Line renowned for its connections to the picturesque area of Matsue and Izumo in Shimane Prefecture, was halted. In response to the disruption, travelers were offered the rare opportunity to stay overnight on the newly introduced Yakumo train sets, which were repurposed as a “train hotel” for the night. The video highlights the atmosphere of Okayama Station late at night, the arrangements made for stranded passengers, and the special features of the new Yakumo’s semi-compartment accommodations.

The Yakumo Limited Express recently upgraded its fleet, providing passengers with modern amenities and an improved ride experience. Staying aboard such a train as a ‘hotel’ due to an emergency suspension offers a glimpse into both Japanese hospitality and the operational challenges and solutions during unexpected weather events. Additionally, Okayama itself serves as a major railway hub and is known for landmarks such as Okayama Castle and Kōrakuen Garden, making the circumstances at its station particularly significant for anyone interested in rail travel in western Japan.
