Walking the Rainy Mukogawa Gorge: Abandoned Fukuchiyama Railway Cherry Blossom Trail

By Ambient Exploration

This video captures a peaceful morning walk under the rain along the former Fukuchiyama Railway line in Takedao, Takarazuka, Japan. The route follows the Mukogawa Gorge, a scenic valley surrounded by mountains, where cherry blossoms linger in late bloom and the mist is ever-present due to the spring weather. What once served as an active train line now offers hikers a unique path beside the Mukogawa River, enveloped in the tranquility of nature and accented by the seasonal beauty of sakura.

As the walk progresses, viewers will notice several old railway tunnels that punctuate the route, some of which are so long that light cannot penetrate from either end. To maintain a relaxing viewing experience, these stretches in complete darkness have been edited out of the footage. The path is known for its atmospheric charm, especially on rainy days when raindrops create a calming backdrop and the blossoms seem even more vibrant against the damp landscape.

This stretch of the Fukuchiyama line is easily accessible from Takarazuka and is praised among locals and visitors for its lush scenery and peaceful ambiance. The Mukogawa Gorge area is especially popular during cherry blossom season but provides impressive views and a tranquil setting throughout the year. Takedao itself is a small onsen (hot spring) town nestled along the route. The walk not only delivers soothing rain sounds for relaxation but also showcases a lesser-known side of Hyōgo Prefecture tourism, blending Japan’s industrial heritage with its natural wonders.
